TW: Murder and death
Juan Jumalon, a radio journalist stationed at Calamba, Misamis Occidental, was brutally shot while broadcasting live from his home last November 5—marking his death the fourth amongst journalist killings since Marcos Jr. took office last June 2022. The slaying of journalists in the country painfully proves that the safety of the press remains to be threatened. Since democracy was reinstated in the Philippines in 1986, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines stated that Jumalon’s death is the 199th recorded killing of journalists in the country. In continuously voicing press freedom, The Angelite vigorously condemns the impunity and injustice against journalists who are constantly assaulted, red-tagged, and intimidated under by the Marcos-Duterte administration. We stand with all the journalists who ceaselessly serve their lives for the people and the truth.
